Who we are
Covenant Community Church – which began meeting together in 1998 -- is an evangelical, Southern Baptist church in Fredericksburg, Va., seeking to glorify God through the exaltation of Jesus, the proclamation of His gospel, the expositional preaching of Scripture, and God-centeredness in corporate worship, service, evangelism, missions, discipleship, and all of life together.
As sinners saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, we seek to make much of the gospel and its ongoing impact in our lives in an attempt to fulfill our Lord’s commission to make disciples of all people. We believe God has brought us into a covenant with Himself and with one another, and we rejoice in the loving gifts God has given us of Himself and each other in our diversity.
What we proclaim
We proclaim Christ and His gospel. The gospel begins with the holy God, absolute ruler over all His creation. In His mercy, God chose not to condemn all human beings despite their sin against Him but to send His Son to save a people for Himself. His Son, Christ Jesus, lived a perfectly righteous life, died on a cross as the sinless sacrifice, and rose from the dead -- all as a substitute for those who would repent of their sins and place their faith in Him. All sinners who trust in Jesus and His work are counted righteous in Him before the holy God.
What to expect
We believe corporate worship should be controlled by Scripture and shaped by the gospel. Our weekly gathering begins with expressions of praise for God and His greatness. In seeing who He is, we are reminded of who we are – prompting us to confess our sins against Him. We follow by giving Christ thanks for His saving work that has paid for all our sins. We also pray to our all-knowing, all-powerful God for the needs of His people and those not yet His.
In our worship, Bible reading and prayer are priorities. We sing old and modern hymns, as well as Scripture-based songs, that we hope help Christians from diverse cultures and backgrounds in their worship of God. The preaching of God’s Word normally is conducted in an expositional manner, whereby the preacher explains and applies the meaning of a passage in the Bible. We partake of the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of the month as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice for His people. A nursery staffed by people in the church who have undergone background checks is available.
Who are our leaders
Covenant Community Church has a congregational form of church government led by elders. These men shepherd the church, seeking to provide protection, guidance, and biblical teaching for the fellowship. The church members make up the primary decision-making body of the congregation.
Tom Strode, the pastor, is currently the only active elder, though the church hopes to add other elders soon. Tom received a Master of Divinity degree from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary and previously served on a church staff in Memphis. He also works part-time for the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission as the Washington, D.C., correspondent for Baptist Press.
Who are our partners
Covenant Community Church is in cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia. A portion of our tithes and offerings goes to these entities to support international and domestic missions, as well as church planting, various need-meeting ministries, theological training and other causes.
Our church also partners with indigenous gospel ministries in Nepal, Peru, and Uganda, as well as the Choices Women’s Center of Fredericksburg. We are the sending church for and provide ongoing support to Redeemer Church, a Southern Baptist plant in King George, Va.
